The trial was stopped because the drugs had been found to cause an increased risk of heart attack and stroke.
The drug's manufacturer, Eli Lilly, said it was confident its results would be confirmed through further clinical trials.
The company, based in Ireland, said it had consulted to doctors on the trial.
Patients who had been taking sildenafil for a few months had been given an open label trial of the drug. A second open label trial was set for next year.
A spokesman for Pfizer said: "Our regulatory officers have made it clear that their company is confident of our results."
The drug has also been approved by the Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH).
In June, a separate appeal by men suffering from erectile dysfunction from a study in the journal Clinical Orthopaedics was stopped because of a low risk of heart attack and stroke.
In a statement, Pfizer said it was confident the results would be confirmed through further clinical trials.
Pfizer shares were down 1.9% on the New York Stock Exchange at $36.70 on Friday.
